Connecting Ha Ling Peak & Grassi Lakes: The Ultimate 15.5km Canmore Day Hike

Hey everyone, Hiking Tiger here! 🐯

Following up on my quick Ha Ling Peak guide, today I’m breaking down the ultimate 15.52 km combo hike: connecting Grassi Lakes and Ha Ling Peak into one epic day adventure in Canmore!

If you don’t have a car or simply want to maximize your time in the Canadian Rockies, this guide covers public transit access, trail breakdowns, and pro tips from my 4-hour and 42-minute trek.

πŸ“Š Combo Hike Quick Facts

  • Route: Grassi Lake Trailhead ↔ Grassi Lakes ↔ Goat Creek Parking / Ha Ling Trailhead ↔ Ha Ling Peak Summit (Out & Back)
  • Total Distance / Duration: 15.52 km / 4 hours 42 minutes (including breaks)
  • Trail Difficulty:
    • Grassi Lakes Section: Easy (Gentle incline past stunning turquoise lakes)
    • Ha Ling Peak Section: Moderate to Challenging (Steep switchbacks & loose rock near the top)
  • Public Transit Tip: Take the free local bus from downtown Canmore straight to the Grassi Lake Trailhead!

🚌 Getting There via Public Transit

No car? No problem! While there is no direct bus to the upper Ha Ling Peak parking lot, you can easily take Canmore’s free local transit to the Grassi Lake Trailhead.

Starting from Grassi Lakes allows you to warm up along the crystal-clear alpine lakes before connecting to the main Ha Ling Peak trail, making it the perfect car-free day hike in Canmore.

πŸ₯Ύ Trail Breakdown: Lakes to Summit

1️⃣ Grassi Lakes Section – Easy & Scenic

The hike begins with a gentle stroll through lush green forest. This section is well-maintained and suitable for all skill levels. Passing by the glowing turquoise Grassi Lakes is the perfect way to warm up your legs before the real incline begins.

2️⃣ Ha Ling Peak Section – The Leg Burner

Once you merge onto the Ha Ling Peak route, the trail steepens rapidly. The most demanding section is near the summit, where loose scree (gravel) and strong alpine winds test your footing.

Though trekking poles would have been handy for the slippery descent, standing on the summit and soaking in 360-degree views of downtown Canmore and the Bow Valley makes every single step worth it.

β˜€οΈ Weather, Gear & Pro Tips

  • Weather & Layers: We experienced a quick 15-minute shower on the way down, but it cleared up nicely. While the temperature was comfortable, strong winds at the summit cooled down sweat rapidly. Always pack a windbreaker!
  • Gear & Fuel: I used a lightweight running vest with 1.5L of water (drank about 1.1L) and refueled at the top with a chocolate bar and energy chews.
  • 🐯 Hiking Tiger’s Pro Tip: If you have a car and want a quick, high-reward workout, driving straight to Goat Creek Parking for just Ha Ling Peak (~7.8 km) is ideal. But if you want the full Canmore mountain experience, this 15.5 km combo is unbeatable!

🐯 Final Verdict & Summary

An unforgettable day hike offering both serene turquoise lakes and dramatic mountain peak vistas in a single loop.
