[Canadian Rockies] Johnston Canyon & Ink Pots Trail: Parking, Transit, Outfit & Prep Guide (Part 1: Preparation)

Roar! 🐯 Welcome back! I’m Hiking Tiger, exploring wild trails across the globe.

If you’re planning a trip to Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, there is one iconic trail you absolutely cannot miss: the world-famous Johnston Canyon, continuing onwards to the hidden, vibrant mineral springs known as Ink Pots.

While many visitors turn back at the Upper Falls, the true heart of the Rockies’ wilderness begins on the path leading up to Ink Pots. To help fellow hikers make the most of their journey, I’ve put together a comprehensive guide covering everything you need to know before you set foot on the trail—from parking strategies, public transit options, and park passes, to outfits and packing tips.

1. Trailhead, Parking Reality & Public Transit Tips

📍 Trailhead Overview

  • Trail Name: Johnston Canyon & Ink Pots Trail
  • GPS Address: Johnston Canyon Parking Lot (Bow Valley Pkwy, Alberta)
  • Fees: Free parking and trail access (Parks Canada Discovery Pass required)

🅿️ On-Site Parking Breakdown

  • The Reality: I arrived at around 1:00 PM on a weekday, and the parking lot was completely packed. Finding a spot was quite a challenge. Since Johnston Canyon is one of the most visited spots in Banff, I strongly recommend arriving before 9:00 AM or after 3:00 PM during peak season (June to September).
  • Amenities: Right at the trailhead near the parking lot, you’ll find clean, well-maintained restroom facilities with running water and handwashing stations—perfect for a final pit stop before heading out.

🚌 How to Get There via Public Transit (Roam Transit)

If you want to skip the parking hassle, taking local public transit is your best bet.

  • Route: Roam Transit Route 9 (Johnston Canyon Express)
  • Departure: Downtown Banff (Banff High School Transit Hub)
  • Travel Time: Approx. 35 to 40 minutes
  • Season: Operates regularly during summer and fall peak seasons.
  • Pro Tip: Bus seats fill up fast during peak season, so be sure to reserve your tickets in advance on the official Roam Transit website.

💡 Navigation Tip: Cellular coverage can be spotty in the national park, so downloading offline maps beforehand is recommended. However, trail signage from the parking lot all the way to Ink Pots is exceptionally clear, making it very easy to navigate without getting lost.

2. Banff Essentials: Parks Canada Pass & Bear Safety

🎫 Parks Canada Discovery Pass

While entry to Johnston Canyon itself is free, you must display a valid Parks Canada Discovery Pass in your vehicle while parked anywhere inside Banff National Park. Passes can be purchased online, at park gates, or at the Banff Visitor Centre.

🐻 Bear Safety in the Rockies

Alberta’s wild landscapes are home to both Black Bears and Grizzlies. While the lower canyon section is busy and generally safe, the trail leading past Upper Falls toward Ink Pots gets quieter and denser.

  • Always carry Bear Spray in an easily accessible location (such as on your hip or chest strap), never packed inside your backpack.
  • Make noise or talk periodically with your hiking partners to alert wildlife of your presence.

3. Weather, Recommended Outfit & Layering Strategy

☀️ Weather Conditions

  • Temperatures: High 23°C / Low 8°C (73°F / 46°F)
  • Conditions: Slightly overcast, making it ideal for hiking without overheating under direct sunlight.

👕 Outfit Worn

  • Top: Long-sleeve performance shirt
  • Bottom: Shorts
  • Headwear: Bucket hat
  • Footwear: Mid-cut hiking boots (CampLine Changer)

🧥 Temperature Differences & Layering Tips

  • Chilly Open Area: While trekking through the forested path kept temperatures warm, arriving at Ink Pots felt noticeably cooler due to higher elevation and open terrain. When the clouds rolled in or the wind picked up, it felt quite breezy.
  • Outfit Review: The shorts and long-sleeve combo worked great during the walk, but long pants are recommended to protect your legs from brush and keep warm during rest breaks at higher elevations. Carrying a light windbreaker in your pack is essential.

4. Backpack Capacity, Snacks & The Ultimate Insider Tip

🎒 Pack & Hydration

  • Backpack: 40L (Halifax Medium Backpack)
  • Water Prepared: 1.5L (Actual consumed: ~700ml)
  • Tip: Staying hydrated is key as elevation gains increase. Packing 1L to 1.5L of water or electrolyte drinks is ideal.

🍫 Trail Snacks & Meal

  • Snacks: Chocolates, biscuits, energy gels
  • Rest Area: At Ink Pots, there are several wooden benches where you can sit back, enjoy a snack, and soak in the views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

🏊‍♂️ The Ultimate Highlight: Swimsuit & Spare Clothes!

Upon reaching Ink Pots, you’ll witness cold, underground spring waters bubbling up to form vibrant pools. A popular highlight for many hikers is taking a refreshing dive straight into the freezing cold spring pools after a sweaty trek!

  • Must-Bring: If you plan to plunge into the cold spring water, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, light towel, and a change of clothes!
  • Pack Light: Heavy camera gear can get burdensome; sticking to a smartphone camera keeps your load light. (Always remember to Pack It In, Pack It Out—leave no trace behind!)

🌲 Wrap-Up

Johnston Canyon & Ink Pots is a world-class trail offering great amenities and scenic views. With proper planning for parking and the right gear packed, you’re set for an unforgettable Rockies adventure!
