Hey everyone, Hiking Tiger here! ๐ฏ
Today, Iโm sharing my fresh trail report from one of Canmoreโs most iconic summits: Ha Ling Peak. I tackled this quick 7.82 km out-and-back route in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Here is everything you need to know about parking, trail conditions, gear, and what to wear!
๐ Quick Facts: Ha Ling Peak at a Glance
- Route: Goat Creek Parking Lot โ Ha Ling Peak Summit (Out & Back)
- Distance / Duration: 7.82 km / 2 hours 30 minutes
- Difficulty: Moderate (Steep incline with a loose rock/scree section near the top)
- Parking: Goat Creek Parking Lot (Free, plenty of spots available)
- Restrooms: 4 vault toilets available at the parking lot
- Public Transit: No direct bus to the trailhead (Free bus service goes to Grassi Lake Trailhead nearby)
๐ ฟ๏ธ Trailhead Access & Parking
Set your GPS to Goat Creek Parking Lot. Parking was surprisingly easy to find.
Once you park, youโll see the large “Ha Ling Peak Trailhead” sign right across the road. The trail is extremely well-maintained and straightforward. If you are taking public transport, take the free local bus to Grassi Lake Trailhead and walk up from there.
โ๏ธ Weather & What to Wear
The weather was fantastic overall! Although rain was forecasted for the afternoon, we only got a quick 15-20 minute shower during the descent before it cleared right back up.
- What I Wore: Shorts, long-sleeve performance shirt, bucket hat, sunglasses, and mid-cut hiking boots.
- Pro Layering Tip: Shorts and a long-sleeve top are plenty as long as you apply sunscreen. However, the wind gets quite strong near the summit, so always pack a windbreaker in your bag to prevent chills while taking a summit break!
๐ Gear & Fuel Setup
For this quick hike, I wore a lightweight running vest purchased from Amazon.
- Hydration & Snacks: I packed 1.5L of water and drank about 1.1L. For snacks, I brought two chocolate bars and energy chewsโperfect for a quick boost at the summit.
- ๐ก Hiking Tiger Pro Tip: I didn’t bring trekking poles today, but I heavily regretted it during the descent. The upper section near the summit is loose scree and rocky terrain. Bring poles to save your knees and stay steady!
๐ฅพ Trail Breakdown & Summit Views
The trail is single-track and very easy to follow (I downloaded the map on AllTrails, but honestly didn’t even need to check it).
The most challenging part was definitely the final stretch near the summit. The terrain becomes loose gravel, and the wind picks up significantly. But the moment you reach the top, all the effort pays off instantly!
You get an unobstructed 360-degree view of downtown Canmore and the surrounding Canadian Rockies. While there aren’t many flat rocks to sit on, the panoramic view is more than worth it.
๐ฏ Final Verdict & Summary
A refreshing hike starting through lush green forests and ending with sweeping valley views. It’s a great workout for intermediate hikers, solos, and anyone looking for a rewarding peak in Canmore.
๐ฏ Hiking Tiger’s One-Line Summary: “A crisp, invigorating climb offering the absolute best panoramic view of Canmore!”
Stay tuned for Part 2, where Iโll break down how to connect Ha Ling Peak with Grassi Lakes for a 15.5 km epic day hike!
